Craps is a dice game in which the players make wagers on the outcome of the roll, or a series of rolls, of a pair of dice. Players may wager money against each other playing "street craps" or a bank playing " casino craps", also known as "table craps", or often just "craps".
Because it requires little equipment, "street craps" can be played in informal settings. Craps developed in the United States from a simplification of the western European game of Hazard. The origins of Hazard are obscure and may date to the Crusades. Hazard was brought from London to New Orleans about by the returning Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville , the young gambler and scion of a family of wealthy colonial Louisiana landowners.
Both Hazard and its new offshoot were unfamiliar and rejected by Americans of his social class, leading de Marigny to introduce his novelty to the local underclass. Fieldhands taught their friends, and deckhands carried the new game up the Mississippi River. Celebrating the popular success of his novelty, de Marigny gave the name Craps to a street in his New Orleans real estate development.
The central game, called Pass from the French word for pace or step, has been gradually supplemented over the decades by many companion games which can be played simultaneously. The entire collection of over one hundred separate and independent possible games is called Craps. The name Craps was a Louisiana mispronunciation of the word "crabs", which in London had been the joint epithet for the numbers two and three, which in Hazard are the only permanent instant losing numbers for wagers on Pass.

That way you can see all of the odds displayed in one table and you'll be able to decide which bets are better than others. You can see why the free odds bet is such a great one and why some of the proposition bets are terrible.
My advice is to study this information or at least glance at it to find good strategies. As you can see from the payout table, there are many bets that sound exotic and arcane but they really aren't that good, even though they may sound like the "secret" bets that no one knows about. Really the only good ones are the pass line or don't pass in conjunction with the free odds bets.
There are a few other decent ones as well. The trick to know is that when the house edge is a very low percentage, then the bet is a good one. Also remember the fact that the number 7 is rolled more often than any other number. The 2 and 12 snake eyes and box cars are rolled the least and have low probabilities of coming out. You can read about this in our odds and probabilities page if you would like to understand the concept behind this.
The pass line bet is the most common wager used in the game of craps. This is considered a line bet because there is a large line area on the table layout where you can place your chips. The bet itself is simple, you are essentially wagering that the shooter will roll a 7 or 11 on the come out roll to win. If the shooter rolls a 2, 3, or 12 which are craps numbers , then the player loses the bet. If the dice lands on a point number such as 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, then that number will be established as the point number.
If you have wagered on the pass line, then the shooter must roll that same point number before rolling a 7 in order to win the bet. Remember, the seven is the most probable number to roll out of all the others. You basically have the advantage on the come out roll and the disadvantage if you have to roll the point later on in the round.
Winnings are paid out 1 to 1, so these are even odds. The actual odds are Because of this, the house edge is only a small 1. I displayed the bet below so you can get an idea of where this is on the craps table.
If you click on the image, you can play the free flash game using this same table. When players make a pass line bet, they can also wager an additional pass line free odds bet after the point has been established.
